The Long and Short of It

Denim. To put it simply, it's a bit of a love-hate relationship. Personally, I am sort of exhausted by the subject. To me, the whole process is kind of unpleasant: you take a billion pairs into the dressing room, get humiliated by what must be a fun-house mirror (is my bum that big?) all to finally settle on a pair that's the lesser of all evils, only to then plunk down the debit card to spend a quarter of a paycheck on what essentially are cotton pants.

Deeeep breath.

But oh, when you do find a great pair, the [rear] end is so worth the means.

Oh, but it's not over. Then there is the matter of footwear. You finally find THE pair of jeans, but quickly realize you can only wear them with your highest of heels (which are so uncomfortable you only wear those about once a month). What to wear with the shoes that you actually wear - your flats? Back to the fitting room with jeans of a shorter length and the mad search starts all over again, right?

Thankfully, no. Ladies, we have a new solution. We have Taylor Denim.

No, this isn't a new fad denim line. Creator Erika Weidner has come up with something so simple, so genius that you soon won't be able to live without it (and wonder how you ever did). Taylor Denim is a super-duty adhesive that you can apply to the too-long jeans in question that you've had move from your regular lineup to the bench, thanks to their utter lack of...versatility. Simply flip the jeans inside-out, cut the tape to fit the needed width and fold up the hem. Flip the leg right-side-out and you have a new shorter hem, that actually looks super clean and crisp.

Another use? Taylor Denim can be used to keep the cuffs of your fave boyfriend jeans in place, so when you walk (or run!) your folds stay perfectly in place. Sound a little confusing? Don't you fret - the website offers cute and easy to understand how-to's.

One pack of Taylor Denim: $12.
Actually being able wear the jeans you've purchased: priceless.

Last week, Erika was kind enough to speak with me about Taylor Denim, her favorite jeans and looking good when the economy isn't looking so good.

FB&F: Tell us about your inspiration in creating Taylor Denim - how did the idea come to you?
EW: About a year ago I was on vacation in Hong Kong (I live in San Francisco) and was on my own for 5 awesome days. I walked everywhere and checked out everything. But by the end of the trip I destroyed my hems. I was in flat ballet shoes and needless to say, most of the time I wear heels of some sort, like most women. So an idea was born. I wanted a good way to temporarily alter the length of my jeans. God knows I paid enough for them.
FB&F: Since you have become quite a sage when it comes to all things jeans, can you tell our readers about some of your favorite denim lines?
EW: I really like Hudson's and Joe's, but sometimes if I am just putzing around it is great to wear a pair of GAP jeans. They cost what jeans should cost to start with, so it is okay if I destroy their shape.
FB&F: Torn jeans, stonewashing and cutoffs are back - thoughts?
EW: Torn jeans never should have been "in." A clean, classic cut and color that makes a woman look put together is far more chic than holes and frays.
FB&F: Besides making good use of Taylor Denim (of course!), how are you staying stylish in this economy?
EW: Like most people, I am economizing big time. I love sites like gilt.com. I can still get quality clothing for a fraction of the price and buy staple pieces I can build on. Always, always, always buy at a steep discount. There is simply no reason to pay full price for anything. I do not buy for anything less than 70% off!

Thank you so much, Erika, for taking the time to speak with us!! xox
