Chic of the Week
Who: Whitney Port, the likeable one. What: A scoopneck tank by James Perse, highwaisted sequin skirt by Yigal Azrouel skirt and an ombre Prada purse.
When: Friday, August 22, 2008 (I know this is technically last week, but this week has been pretty dry!).
Where: Heineken Premium Light's US Open Official Players Party
in New York.
Why: I love how Whitney makes lots of skin and sequins somehow look casual and not overtly sexy. The overall mood is really relaxed, young and fresh, without being too loud or too trendy (I'm looking at you, every other person on The Hills). Bravo, Whitney.

Chic of the Week
What: A 3.1 Phillip Lim Dress paired with cobalt heels.
When: Monday, August 18, 2008.
Where: The premiere of The House Bunny, hosted by Cosmogirl!, in New York.
Why: The whole look is completely sleek and totally pretty, from her uber-shiny hair and glowing skin to the sheen of her muted floral mini. The puffed cap sleeves are also super flattering on the actress, as is the dress's short, but not too short, length.

Designer Spotlight: Vena Cava
Although they have been around long enough (in fashion time that is) to no longer be considered a new designer, thanks to Blake Lively, who has been wearing their designs all over Manhattan and the Hamptons lately, Vena Cava is getting some much deserved attention this summer.
In a black jeweled Vena Cava romper at the Dark Knight premiere, on the Gossip Girl set in a Vena Cava dress, and appearing on TRL in another Vena Cava romper
Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai met at Parsons School of Design (home to Tim Gunn) and after graduating in 2003 the two decided to collaborate and design the Vena Cava line. Known for their unique, retro-inspired looks, these two have built a brand whose quirky style fits perfectly in our dream fall wardrobe of floaty silk pieces that we will wear with layers (think layered soft t's, cardigans, leggings, wool tights).
Lucky for us FB&F girls, Basic Boutique has quite a few of Vena Cava items on sale right now. Our favorites are:

Chic of the Week
Who: Lake Bell, actress. What: A vintage blue belt atop a vintage Carven blouse and an American Apparel pencil skirt, all paired with a clutch by Kara Ross and Ferragamo pumps.
When: Wednesday, August 13, 2008.
Where: The premiere of In Search of a Midnight Kiss in Los Angeles.
Why: This is a perfect example of a great way to wear vintage - the blouse could end up looking a little frumpy and matronly if paired with a full skirt from an earlier decade. The on-trend highwaisted skirt helps to modernize the look and add a little sex appeal. I also love the slightly mussed and very now version of Veronica Lake waves that Lake is sporting, allowing the iconic and glamorous style to become a little more casual and accessible.

Chic of the Week
Who: Blake Lively, actress. What: A vibrant one shouldered minidress from the Fall 2008 Tadashi Shoji collection.
When: Sunday, August 3, 2008.
Where: The Teen Choice Awards, at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City, CA.
Why: Blake helps to tame down the bright color of her mini by pairing it with simple accessories (tame black pumps and a wide belt) and soft hair. This helps make the dress a little less in your face, while also letting the color and cut speak for itself.
Miss Lively had this one shouldered number shortened significantly from its walk down the runway to her walk down the blue carpet. Which way do you prefer - demure below the knee length or Blake's s-h-o-r-t style?
On the runway, Fall 2008. Retail: $610.

Chic of the Week
Who: Model Hana Soukupova. What: A black dress from Thread Social and tan flats with gold metal detailing.
When: Saturday, July 26, 2008.
Where: The famous Hamptons' Super Saturday shopping extravaganza, in Watermill.
Why: It's all so simple and easy. I love the touch of assymetry at the neckline that keeps this LBD from being dull, the simple gold bangle pushed up the right arm and the rather bold choice to go with a brown sandal while wearing black. It's the little touches that keep the look young and fresh.
How to get this easy summer look for less?

Bask Sandal, $89.95 (available at Steve Madden).
1/4" Gold Bangle, $25 (available at J. Crew).
